RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Political accusations are now beginning to fly over the sudden resignation of Suffolk County police Chief James Burke.
Some are questioning County Executive Steve Bellone‘s judgment in appointing Burke to the position.
Burke was accused, but never charged, with beating a burglary suspect at his home. The suspect reportedly stole items, including a gun, from Burke’s police car.
Bellone admits Burke’s resignation is related to a renewed federal civil rights investigation into the charges, WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported.
A Bellone spokesman calls criticism of the county executive related to the case baseless and desperate. Bellone is up for re-election this year.
Burke is the highest-ranking uniformed officer in Suffolk County.
