HAUPPAUGE, NY (CBSNewYork) – Officials announced their plan for the future of crime fighting in Suffolk County in Hauppauge today.

Acting Suffolk County police commissioner Edward Webber said making precinct commanders more responsible and accountable for tracking crime trends in their district will make communities safer.

“We will track, analyze, and disseminate real time crime data to local precinct and investigative commanders so that they can react swiftly to crime trends,” said Webber on Thursday.

There will be field intelligence officers assigned to every precinct.

“That field intelligence officer will work with the precinct commander, the squad commander, and local precinct personnel to identify and target locations, groups, and persons of interest,” said Webber.

The new Suffolk police reorganization plan highlights improved communication and community relations – with special focus on gang and drug activities.

The goal, Webber says, “We’re all going to know who the bad guys are.”

And ultimately they will, says Webber, make their community safer.

The plan got praise from Kate Browning, the county legislature’s public safety chair.

“It looks like very proactive policing,” she said.
