NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A Long Island woman has been arrested for allegedly killing her newborn baby earlier this week.
Suffolk County police said Santos Elena Ruiz Solano, of Central Islip, gave birth to a girl around 3 a.m. Sunday at 40 Shoal Dr. in West Islip, where she was employed as a live-in housekeeper.
Shortly after her birth, the child suffered traumatic injuries and died at the scene, police said.
The 26-year-old is accused of then putting the baby in a plastic bag and leaving the home.
“She’s a live-in housekeeper that’s worked there only a short period of time and went to her room that evening and was not seen again until her husband to showed up to take her to the hospital,” Suffolk County Police Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick told WCBS 880.
“She secretly delivered this baby and had not advised her husband or any others that she was pregnant.”
Police said complications from child-birth forced Ruiz Solano to seek medical attention at a nearby hospital.
The newborn was recovered from a garbage can and given to hospital personnel, who called police.
Ruiz Solano was charged with second-degree murder. She is being held overnight for arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.
